Tucked in India’s Parvati valley, travelers will find the eco-friendly Himalayan Village, a perfect spot for adventure seekers and those who want to find the ultimate fairytale retreat. The valley offers treks, blooming flower valleys, thick flora and fauna, crystal clear waterfalls, and calming rivers set in the Deodar forest. Eight cottages make up the village, including two Machan-style rooms that offer sweeping views of the surrounding mountains.

Built in the ancient Kathkuni style (think: dry stacking stones and wood without cement), the inner walls are mud-plastered, while living spaces are furnished with uniquely carved teak furniture, handmade Tussar silk curtains, and traditional brass fittings. All cottages offer guests a king-size bed, four-seater sofa, mini bar, fully furnished and equipped toilets, and even a personal lawn.

Guests can participate in a wide range of activities, including rock climbing, river crossing, jungle excursions, mountain biking, trout angling, horse riding, and even a jungle barbecue. All that adventure leaving you hungry? The Himalayan Village has multiple restaurants for guests to enjoy authentic Himalayan cuisine. After feeding your stomach, feed your soul by joining staff members for the traditional folk dances of Himachal.

Anemoessa Guesthouse - A Cave Hotel With A View Over The Corinthian Gulf

Some hotels put you to bed inside a cave and call it a gimmick. Anemoessa Guesthouse, in the hills above the Corinthian Gulf, does something slightly stranger: it treats the cave as the point, then adds a wood fire and a balcony looking out over water and mountains, and lets …

Royal Valentina Castle – A Bulgarian Retreat Built on Thermal Water

A stretch of southwestern Bulgaria has two castle-shaped hotels rising out of the landscape between two villages, visible from far enough away that drivers on the road to Leshten tend to do a double-take. Neither building is old. Both are heated and filled by water that comes out of the …

Berghotel Obersteinberg - Inside the Family Guesthouse Running On Candlelight and Cheese

Millions of people pour into Switzerland's Jungfrau region every year, and almost all of them stick to the same handful of villages and viewpoints. Berghotel Obersteinberg is not one of them. Capitol Reef Resort - Wagons, Teepees, And A Park Utah Forgot To Brag About

A single photograph did it: covered wagons parked against blood-red cliffs, looking more like a Western film set than a working hotel. It turns out the wagons are real, they're bookable, and they sit a mile from the entrance to one of Utah's quietest national parks - one so overshadowed …

Hotel Icefiord - Ilulissat's Front Row Seat To The Ice

At Hotel Icefiord in Ilulissat, Greenland, the staff keep a chalkboard in the restaurant where they mark a line for every whale spotted from the terrace each month. Some months it fills up fast. It's a bit of a running joke among them, but it also sums up the whole …

Hotel Maměnka - A Fairytale Mountain Lodge That Burned Down – and Rose from the Ashes

Libušín sits on a mountain pass in the Czech Republic's Moravian-Silesian Beskids, looking like something out of a Brothers Grimm tale. This isn't some modern Alpine resort masquerading as traditional – it's the real deal, a wooden lodge dripping with hand-carved details and Art Nouveau flourishes that somehow manages to …

Kato Dool Wellness Resort - A Technicolor Refuge on the Nile

Some places whisper, and some shout. Kato Dool does something in between – it hums. Sprawled across a hillside in Aswan's Nubian village of Gharb Soheil, this wellness resort is painted in shades that could make a sunset jealous: turmeric yellows, coral pinks, sky blues. It's the kind of place …
