After a long day scrambling over red rock, the appeal of a place like the Broken Spur Inn & Steakhouse becomes obvious fast. It sits on a hilltop just outside Torrey, Utah, close enough to Capitol Reef National Park that you can be back at the entrance in five minutes, and it comes with its own steakhouse, an indoor pool, and – if you're after something a little different – a set of covered wagons you can actually sleep in.
It's not trying to be flashy. It's trying to be useful: a hot breakfast before you head out, a hearty dinner when you're back, and a soak in the hot tub before bed. For a small desert town with limited options after dark, that combination goes a long way.
Location
Torrey is the small gateway town most people use as a base for Capitol Reef, and the Broken Spur takes advantage of its elevated position above it, with red rock views stretching out from the property. You're just a five-minute drive from the park entrance, which means early starts on the Scenic Drive, the Fruita orchards, or trails like Hickman Bridge don't eat into your day. It also puts you within reach of Scenic Byway 12 and Boulder Mountain if you're threading together a longer loop through southern Utah's parks.
Capitol Reef is part of an International Dark Sky Park, and the inn's hilltop position means the night sky is very much part of the experience here too – worth stepping outside for after dinner, even if you've already had a full day of hiking.
A Property Rooted In Western Character
Capitol Reef itself has a quieter identity than some of Utah's more famous parks.
Instead of the crowds drawn to Zion or Arches, this area is shaped by old orchards, pioneer-era buildings, and wide open desert country – a landscape with a strong sense of 19th century settlement history running through it. The Broken Spur leans into that atmosphere, from its rustic décor to the covered wagons parked on the property.
It's a fitting match for the region: Southern Utah's identity is tied up with ranching and pioneer travel, and staying somewhere that nods to that history, while still giving you a real bed and air conditioning, fits the spirit of a Capitol Reef trip without asking you to actually rough it.
Steaks And A Proper Breakfast
Dining options in a town the size of Torrey are limited, so having a dependable steakhouse on site solves a genuine problem. The Broken Spur Steakhouse specializes in hand-cut steaks and Western comfort food, along with house-made desserts and a decent selection of wine and beer.
The dining room looks out toward the surrounding cliffs, which makes for an easy, unhurried atmosphere after a day spent outdoors – casual enough for families, road-trippers, or anyone just passing through.
Breakfast is served daily and included for anyone staying at the inn, with a buffet spread covering scrambled eggs, country potatoes, sourdough pancakes, sausage, pastries, fruit, and homemade granola. It's a straightforward way to fuel up before heading into the park, without needing to find anywhere else in town first.
The Stay
King Room with Jetted Tub
The Broken Spur offers a handful of traditional room types, all including that complimentary breakfast. The Double Queen rooms sleep up to four across two queen beds, while the Single King or Queen rooms are suited to two guests, with some ADA-accessible options available on request.
For something a bit more indulgent, the Single King with Jetted Tub comes with a soaking tub built for two and a private balcony looking out over the landscape, though this room type is limited.
There's also a Kitchenette Unit with a queen bed and a full kitchen, ideal if you'd rather cook than eat out every night – also limited in availability, so it's worth booking ahead.
Sleeping In A Covered Wagon
If a standard room feels a little too familiar, the property's Conestoga Wagons are the more memorable option.

Bathrooms aren't inside the wagons themselves – each one has a private bathroom located about 25 meters (25 feet) away in a nearby bathhouse, a short walk from your wagon door.
Breakfast is included with a wagon stay as well, and there are firepits nearby for evenings spent outside under Capitol Reef's dark skies.
Each one comes with a king bed, a bunk bed, and a futon, making them a workable choice for families or small groups, with rates based on double occupancy. Despite the pioneer-style exterior, the wagons are fitted with air conditioning, heating, and electricity, so the frontier look doesn't come at the expense of an actual night's sleep.
Winding Down By The Pool
After a day of hiking or driving the park's scenic corridors, the indoor pool and hot tub give you somewhere to unwind without leaving the property, with those same red rock views visible from the water.
There's also an outdoor playground for families traveling with kids, along with yard games and firepits scattered around the grounds – small additions, but the kind that make it easier to spend an evening on site rather than searching for something else to do in a town with fairly limited options after dark.
