Falkensteiner Family Resort Lido - South Tyrol's New Playground In The Sky

Picture a hotel in the Dolomites where the roof has a ski slope, a trampoline park, and a pickleball court, and the swimming pool below empties straight into a natural lake with its own sandy beach. It sounds like something dreamed up for a theme park brochure, but the Falkensteiner Family Resort Lido is a working hotel in the Puster Valley, recently reopened after a major renovation that turned an old family favorite into one of the more inventive family resorts in Europe.

Location

Falkensteiner Family Resort Lido Aerial

The hotel sits in Casteldarne, in South Tyrol's Val Pusteria (Puster Valley), at around 800 meters (2,625 feet) above sea level and about 600 meters (1,970 feet) from the village center. This is the gateway to the Dolomites, with the Kronplatz ski and hiking area just 15 minutes away. The resort has its own private natural lake on site, which turns out to be central to a lot of what makes this place unusual.

Building the Falcon's Nest

The original hotel dates back to 1957, and this latest chapter is the work of noa* studio, which took on a full renovation and expansion. The project added 36 new rooms, bringing the total to 118.

The headline feature is the rooftop: a 300-meter (984-foot) circular route covering 4,900 square meters (52,743 square feet) of sports and entertainment space, built as an undulating structure designed to sit comfortably within the alpine landscape rather than fight it.

Falkensteiner Family Resort Lido - Exterior during Winter

The facade uses natural wood patterns in a muted, monochromatic palette, echoing traditional South Tyrolean barns.

Inside, the design leans into playful, nature-inspired details: a restaurant overlooking the lake with lily-shaped seating and reed-like lighting, and a reception area built around circular shapes and forest motifs. Every one of the 118 rooms has a separate area for parents and children divided by a sliding partition, along with bathrooms with sinks set at two different heights.

Restaurants

Falkensteiner Family Resort Lido - Lido Restaurant

The food concept here is built around what the hotel calls 12 Farms Gourmet Cuisine, sourced from regional producers and prepared with a strong emphasis on Alpine-Mediterranean cooking. Meals are served as Full Board Plus, which covers breakfast, a lighter lunch, an afternoon "Bake & Cake" spread, and a family dinner built around live cooking stations, including a dedicated dumpling and pasta operation and a pizza and barbecue station.

For a more formal evening, there's DODICI, a pure dining restaurant with 15 tables offering a daily-changing menu across fish, meat, and vegetarian or vegan lines. Kids eat at the Falky Restaurant, built to child height with its own menu running from age 11 months up, plus an à la carte baby food service for children under three.

La Terrazza

Falkensteiner Family Resort Lido - La Terrazza

This is the hotel's main bar, combining an indoor space with a fireplace and an outdoor lakeside terrace. It hosts live music and evening shows, along with a children's disco, and includes an Italian coffee bar serving espresso and brioche.

Rooftop Bar

Falkensteiner Family Resort Lido - Rooftop Bar and Bobby Car

Rooftop Bar with a bobby car racing circuit for the kids

Set on the roof with panoramic mountain views, this bar leans into the seasons: mulled wine and a fire bowl in winter, chilled aperitifs on summer evenings.

Rooms

Falkensteiner Family Resort Lido - Exclusive Suite Falkytent

Exclusive Suite Falkytent

All 118 rooms and suites are designed around the same family-first logic: separate zones for parents and children, usually divided by a sliding door, and bathrooms with sinks at different heights so smaller guests aren't stuck on tiptoes. Many rooms include a children's play den built into the design, referencing the falcon that gives the hotel its name.

Castle Room

At 36 to 40 square meters (387 to 430 square feet), this room fits two adults and a child aged three or over. The child's area is a sleeping "castle" separated from the parents by a sliding door, and the room has a balcony with a lake view plus a renovated bathroom.

This 35 to 40 square meter (377 to 430 square foot) suite sleeps two adults and two to three children, with a box-spring double bed for the parents and a children's room, again behind a sliding door, containing two single beds and the Falkynest, a play den. It has a balcony overlooking the lake and includes a parking space in the underground garage.

Exclusive Spa Suite

Falkensteiner Family Resort Lido - Exclusive Spa Suite

Exclusive Spa Suite

The most elaborate of the family suites, with a master bedroom on a box-spring bed, a children's room with two single beds, its own drinks bar, and a smart TV with a game console. There are two bathrooms: one with a whirlpool tub for two, smart TV, and a sound and lighting system, and a second with a double rain shower and dual sinks, plus a walk-in closet.

Suites at this level come with the Lido Exclusive Treatment, which includes drinks with dinner, a welcome bouquet and Prosecco, a stocked minibar on arrival, free e-charging, and access to DODICI.

Family Spa And Water World

Falkensteiner Family Resort Lido - Pool Relax Zone

The Acquapura Family Spa spans 2,800 square meters (30,139 square feet) and links the indoor pool directly to a heated outdoor infinity pool and the resort's natural lake.

Falkensteiner Family Resort Lido - Water Slide

The signature feature is a 120-meter (394-foot), 17-meter-high (56-foot) indoor water slide with a timer for racing, alongside a wave slide and a splash pool kept at around 32°C (90°F) for younger children.

Falkensteiner Family Resort Lido - Sauna

There's a family sauna on the roof, a relaxation room with swings, and a fitness room equipped with a treadmill, exercise bikes, a step machine, dumbbells, and a small selection of resistance machines.

Adults-Only Spa

Falkensteiner Family Resort Lido - Adults Only Spa Saunas

For a quieter break, the adults-only section has its own Finnish sauna, bio sauna, steam bath, and a dedicated relaxation room.

Valo Jump

Falkensteiner Family Resort Lido - Valo Jump

An interactive trampoline installation where jumpers bounce through projected treetops, clouds, and islands, or take on games like defending a sandcastle. This is the only one in Italy offering this particular setup.

Indoor Sports

Falkensteiner Family Resort Lido - Indoor Football and Basketball

The rooftop circuit also functions as a sports park, with a basketball court, a football field, and a hockey area, along with a Bobby Car track for younger children and an elevated mini amusement park.

Outdoor Pools

Beyond the indoor water world, the resort has a heated outdoor infinity pool that runs into the natural lake, complete with a sandy beach and a chill-out zone for lounging between swims.

Rooftop Skiing

Falkensteiner Family Resort Lido - Skiing Roof

One of the more unusual features: a roughly 150-meter (492-foot) ski slope on the roof, built with a synthetic surface designed to replicate the feel of skiing on snow year-round. Ski lessons are available for beginners, and the hotel runs its own ski rental on site, though you're welcome to bring your own skis or snowboard.

Hiking

Hiking in Casteldarne, Italian Alps

The hotel is about 15 minutes from the Kronplatz hiking area, putting you at the edge of the Dolomites with a wide network of alpine trails within easy reach.
