A grand hotel brought up to date
Located just north of San Diego in the small beach town of Del Mar, this hotel is a world of pleasure. Your room is large and has a bar, Nespresso machine, balcony and stunning bathroom – more like an apartment than a hotel room. I have even heard a rumour that their turn down service includes boxes of truffles and chocolate covered Oreos. Every day there are exercise routines run by experienced teachers including hiking, yoga and surfing. The hotel also has three-bed villas that are built in the style of old Florida, with Venetian plaster walls and antique furniture; and for that “wow” factor, they also have sunken Jacuzzis and outdoor fireplaces. The spa is enormous and has a child-free pool, sauna, steam room and numerous treatments available. The fine dining restaurant is called Addison has accolades stacked to the rafters; the cuisine is contemporary French using the best locally-sourced ingredients and menu highlights include coffee-roasted duck and Mission fig marmalade. Nearby is the 4,100-acre Los Penasquitos nature reserve which you can explore in foot, bike or horseback.
